Frugal & Natural Cleaning Recipes P-S:

Porcelain Cleaner:
Rub porcelain surface with a damp cloth sprinkled with cream of tarter or baking soda.

Rust Remover:
  • Recipe 1: Apply full strength white vinegar to the rust by spraying if the object is large, or soaking if small. Allow to stand for 30 minutes, then rinse off. Repeat if needed.
  • Recipe 2: Mix together equal parts of borax and lemon juice, apply to rusted area by spraying if the object is large, or soaking if small. Allow to soak for 30 minutes, then rinse off. Repeat if needed.

Scouring Cleanser:
Combine 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 tablespoon castile soap. Add just enough white vinegar to give it a thick but creamy texture.

Scouring Powder:
  • Recipe 1: Sprinkle baking soda onto a damp sponge or cloth, and rub into surface. Rinse with water. The baking soda is a mild abrasive and natural disinfectant. To be used to clean hard surfaces like stove tops, counters, porcelain, fiberglass and tile. For tough stains, make a paste of baking soda and water and let sit on stain for a couple of hours before wiping up. Tip: A used parmesan cheese shaker makes a good container to keep your baking soda scouring powder.
  • Recipe 2: Table salt can also be used as a stronger abrasive. Salt can scratch some delicate surfaces, so care should be taken. This does work well on glass surfaces, such as burnt on coffee in the bottom of a glass coffee carafe.
  • Recipe 3: For a non-abrasive solution mix 1/4 cup borax with enough vegetable oil based liquid soap (like Murphy's Oil Soap) to form a creamy paste. Add 1/2 teaspoon lemon oil and mix well. A small amount of this mixture can be used to wash the surface with a sponge, then rinsed off.

Shoe / Athletic Shoe Deodorizer:
Combine 6 tablespoons cornstarch, 3 tablespoons baking soda, 20 drops Rosemary essential oil, 20 drops Tea Tree essential oil, 5 drops Lemon essential oil, 5 drops Clove essential oil.  Put 1 - 2 tablespoons in each shoe and rub it in. Allow mixture to sit in shoe overnight, then shake out.

Shower / Tub Cleaner:
Full strength white vinegar can be used to clean the all surfaces of your tub and shower. Tile, grout, faucets, shower heads, shower door tracks, shower doors, etc can be sprayed with full strength vinegar and wiped off with a clean cloth or sponge. Surfaces can also be soaked in the vinegar to remove mineral deposits (including lime and calcium deposits) by placing a vinegar soaked cloth or paper towel on the surface then scrubbing with a tooth brush.

Silver Cleaner:
  • Recipe 1 (no scrub): Place aluminum foil in bottom of sink (shiny side up), cover with about 4 inches of water, sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of salt (or baking soda) in sink, then place silverware in sink for 3-4 minutes. If the silver is badly tarnished it may take 2 soakings. For smaller pieces like jewelry, this same procedure can be used in a mixing bowl or other dish.
  • Recipe 2: Use toothpaste as a mild abrasive to clean silver. Clean with a soft bristled toothbrush, toothpaste, and warm water.
  • Recipe 3: Rub with a paste of baking soda and water.

Stainless Steel Cleaner:
Spray stainless steel appliances with full strength white vinegar and wipe with cloth. The vinegar will cut through grease and finger prints.
